Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour syas he will veto Bill 1089 that would allow for hunting deer over bait. The bill passed the Mississippi House 68-51 on April 1st. The bill would allow hunting over grain and other feed. It would also require bait to be placed in feeders. The whitetail deer population is growing rapidly in Mississippi as in most other states. Hunting over bait is already legal in at least 20 states. The Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Commission advised the Governor......

that hunting over bait, though illegal, is already a common practice in the state as hunters are not discouraged by the $25 fine for deer baiting. In April 2007 the Governor signed a bill to authorize the Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Commission to study the issue of hunting deer over bait. The governor has stated previously that he believes hunting over bait in unethical. He office says he will veto the bill as soon as it arrives on his desk.
