State of Mississippi wildlife management officials are considering allowing whitetail deer hunting over bait. The Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is seeking comment from licensensed hunters on the issue of baiting deer. Hunting license holders from the 2006 and 2007 hunting seasons will be mailed surveys. Surveys should be filled out and mailed back by March 28, and only original surveys will be accepeted, no photocopies or duplicates. The surveys along with information collected from other states that allow deer hunting will be considered by the commision in making this important decision.
Whitetail deer populations are thriving across the US and some herds are reaching record numbers. Many states have already taken measures to help slow the population growth. Extended hunting seasons more doe hunting days and deer baiting are some of the ways these states help control the expanding whitetail deer population.
