Meeting coincides with announcement of new CRP general signup

SALINA — Kansas Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever improved more than 30,000 acres for wildlife in 2010. The organization kicks off its next year of work on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the annual Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever State Habitat Meeting at the Ramada Inn in Salina. The meeting comes on the heels of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever's National Pheasant Fest Feb. 5-6 in Omaha, Neb., where U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a new Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) general signup period running from March 14 to April 15, targeting as much as 4 million acres.

"The timing of this meeting couldn't be any better in terms of getting the word out about the CRP general signup," said Jordan Martincich, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever regional representative for eastern Kansas. "We’ll have many seminars covering CRP wildlife management techniques, and Farm Bill wildlife biologists will be on hand to answer questions about the program."

The Kansas Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever State Habitat Meeting is for local chapter volunteers, members, and anyone interested in improving wildlife habitat in Kansas. The meeting will also feature concurrent seminars from 1p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Habitat seminars include the following topics:

  • national update with Howard Vincent, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever national president and CEO;
  • quail habitat management with Pete Berthelsen, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever senior field coordinator;
  • importance and ingredients of quality brood rearing habitat;
  • relationship of prescribed burning and quality habitat;
  • prairie grouse management;
  • food and cover plot considerations; and
  • brome grass conversion and management.

The day will conclude with the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever Kansas State Banquet at 6:30 p.m. For more information about the meeting, contact Jordan Martincich at 785-242-3175.
