State-owned or managed lands are not included in Unit 19 special seasons.
LAWRENCE — The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) reminds deer hunters that Deer Management Unit 19 was created to focus greater deer harvest in the Kansas City-to-Topeka corridor. Two special seasons were created to reduce deer numbers in this area, primarily on private lands. However, these additional hunting opportunities have also significantly increased hunting pressure and harvest of deer on public lands within Unit 19.

In an effort to reduce public land hunting pressure and harvest, primarily on Clinton Wildlife Area, all state-owned or state-managed lands are excluded in the Unit 19 special seasons this year. Other state-owned properties not included in the Unit 19 special seasons include Douglas State Fishing Lake, near Baldwin, and the Kansas River Wildlife Area near Topeka. On these public lands, there will be no firearms deer hunting allowed during the Unit 19 early firearm season Oct. 9-17, and no archery deer hunting will be allowed during the extended archery season Jan. 10-31.

For more information about hunting on Clinton Wildlife Area or hunting opportunities in Unit 19, phone Jason Tarwater at 785-887-6882 or the KDWP Region 2 Office at 785-273-6740.
