The number of elk and mule deer taken by hunters opening weekend of Montana's general season was right on target on the Rocky Mountain Front, while white-tailed deer totals were down slightly. The numbers were collected at Fish, Wildlife and Parks check station in Augusta, says Brent Lonner, Fish, Wildlife and Parks wildlife biologist. 'Elk harvest was right about average for the opening day,' Lonner says, 'but the whitetail harvest was a little down.
