The deer and elk harvest in northwest Montana is running close to last year’s harvest through the first week of the 2009 big game season. Through November 1, a total of 7,417 hunters passed through the six northwest Montana check stations. These hunters checked 325 whitetail deer, 51 mule deer, and 78 elk for a 6.1 percent rate of hunters with game. This compares to a 5.7 percent rate of hunters with game last year.
