(Great Falls, MT) – Montana State Parks, a division of Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and PPL Montana announced today that the North Shore area downstream from Ryan Dam Road will re-open to the public on September 1, 2011 due to the completion of construction projects in that portion of the project area. This re-opening will provide access to over 6 miles of trails, and will allow hunter access to over 1200 acres of PPLM and FWP lands.

Come and try your hand at an ancient form of hunting! WHAT: First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park is hosting the Annual Montana Atlatl Mammoth Hunt over Labor Day Weekend. The atlatl predates the bow and arrow and was the first true weapon system developed by humans. This weapon was used by Native Americans to hunt the great wooly mammoth as well as many other large prehistoric animals. The atlatl was used by cultures all over the world and is still in use in remote parts of Australia and South America. Regional members of the World Atlatl Association in conjunction with First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park will provide visitors a chance to learn more about the atlatl and practice throwing with this unique weapon.

A management season hunt has been enacted for the area in and adjacent to the town of Colstrip, Montana. The City of Colstrip has requested additional antlerless mule deer licenses be made available one per hunter and valid from the start of the archery season, September 3, 2011 until the end of the big game season, November 27, 2011 in an effort to reduce the number of mule deer in and immediately adjacent to town.
