Michigan Bans Baiting and feeding of Deer in Lower Peninsula
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources banned the baiting and feeding of deer this week. This along with other measures are part of a response plan prepared after a case of Chronic Wasting Disease was confirmed at a private facility in Kent County Michigan. Other measures detailed in the plan include a statewide ban on the transport of live wild deer, and mandatory testing of deer killed in some areas. Deer killed in the Kent county townships of Algoma, Alpine, Cannon, Courtland, Nelson, Plainfield, Sparta, Solon, and Tyrone are required to be taken to Department of Natural Resourses checkpoints for testing. Infected deer suffer weight loss and behavioral changes the disease is always fatal. Chronic Wasting Disease can infect moose, elk and deer.

Ohio city Deer Hunting Ban ruled unconstitutional
jason writes: The city of North Royalton, Ohio is planning to lift a ban on deer hunting within the city limits for residents with state permits. Ohio residents can apply for special deer hunting permits to harvest nuisance deer. These permits are part of a special program designed to help landowners when deer are damaging crops or orchards or causing other agricultural problems and only apply to anterless deer. The city had previously banned hunting within the city limits even in situations where the landowner had obtained the special license from the state. A resident challenged the ban in a letter to the city council. The letter was forwarded to the Law Director for the city who ruled the ban invalid and unconstitutional. North Royalton has no hunting season and harvesting of deer is limited to permit holders who meet all the legal requirements. The city council is expected to officially repeal the ordinance at their meeting next Tuesday.

Michigan May Lift Ban on Hunting Albino Whitetail Deer
jason writes: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources may lift the ban on the harvesting of all white or Albino deer. The Natural Resources commision meets Thursday June 5th and will be considering an amendment that would make it legal to harvest all white or albino deer in Michigan. It has always been legal to harvest piebald deer, which are mostly white with brown patches. Some confusion in deciding if some deer are piebald or albino is the main cause for the proposed amendment. If the amendment is approved at the Natural Resources Commision meeting, it will be legal to harvest both piebald and albino whitetail deer in the 2008 hunting season.

This is a Blue Whitetail Buck I took on Christmas Eve 2007. I would like to know if any of you have seen or heard of anything like this before . If you have I would love to hear from you. I have come up empty so far in my research, and have been unable to locate any info on a blue phase melanistic deer.
